Baseball 101

The popular game baseball is believed to have arrived by means of immigrants from Britain and Ireland, to the United States. According to popular belief, baseball is a game that originated in Ireland a few centuries back. Baseball is a game played between two teams. The batting team bats and the fielding team catches and tries to get the players of the batting team ‘out’ of the game. However, the team that scores the maximum number of ‘runs’ will win the game. Hence, the goal of the game is scoring more points than the rival team and in the language of baseball; points are referred to as ‘runs’.

When they are batting, the nine members of each team will attempt to score runs by running through all the bases in the square shaped field, the ‘diamond’. The process of running through the bases is called a ‘tour’. A player will tour counter clockwise, starting from the home plate, until he arrives back to the home plate.

Looking at how the game baseball is played, one should first know the basic tools of baseball or in other words – the baseball equipment. The tools are the bat, the ball, the mitt and the field.

The bat is an offensive tool made of wood or aluminum, is long and hard and has a diameter of about 5 centimeters with a handle of smaller diameter (about 1 inch).

The ball used in baseball has the size of a fist and is usually white in color with red lacing (though the color could vary).
Made of leather, the mitt, also known as gloves are worn by players as a defensive baseball equipment. Wearing the mitt helps in catching the ball. The shape of the mitt however is not definite, as it changes according to the needs of the defending position of the player.

The field on which baseball is played is in the shape of a diamond and its dimensions can change – depending on the players’ age.

There are a series of innings when playing baseball. Each inning will be divided into two. At the beginning of each half-inning of the baseball match, the nine defensive players will arrange themselves on the field. One defensive player will stand at a designated spot in the centre which is known as the mound whilst the defensive player known as the catcher will stand at the other side of the pitcher’s side of the home plate.

The game begins when the batter holding a bat stands at the home plate, hits the ball thrown at him and starts running towards the first base. Any runners, meanwhile who were already on the base, will try to advance on to other additional bases. The catcher should catch the ball and return them to the pitcher, by this time.

Baseball Rules 101

It is a fact that since 1845 the official baseball rules seem to have had some modifications. In fact, the changes, over the years, have been very few and far between, thus making the baseball rules seem static, which in turn has made it appealing to fans who are keen on following the evolution of the game. Therefore, this game boasts of a very proud history in comparison to other sports.

National game of the United States of America is baseball. During the past years, it has become popular and earned a reputation as an international game played in well over 100 countries in the world. A batter hits the ball and runs from base to base, touching them. A player is deemed to have scored a run lawfully when he finishes his running through the 4 bases without being ‘out’. There are 9 innings in a standard baseball game, with each innings having 6 outs; Three for each team. But it may not be unusual to see fewer innings played by some leagues.According to the baseball rules, minimum of one umpire should be available in a game of baseball. Normally 4 umpires officiate at prominent league matches, but depending on the importance and the league participating, this may vary up to 6 umpires.

Getting the hang of the baseball rules is not as difficult as it appears. But, the beauty of the game lies in analysing and predicting the possible game plan and strategy of the opponent judging by their moves and activity.
