Why doesn’t the MLB have a salary cap?
I think the NFL recently got one about 4 years ago. It makes every team come closer in standards of talent.
If the MLB had one then teams like the Yankees, Mets, and Tigers wouldn’t exist (and I am a Mets fan). I feel that it would be so much better if there was a limit to the amount of spending one team can do as opposed to just buyint out players. Is it really a team’s fault if they are located in New York City as opposed to Kansis city or Tampa Bay? Can you imagine that Tampa Bay team or the Marlins team with 3 more superstars? The Mets and Yankees salary caps are by far the highest in baseball which is totally unfair. It is not a teams fault that they are located in a dump where nobody does to see the team so they can’t make money to sign players. Your thoughts?
you cant cap a league that plays 162 games a year, along with minor league affiliates that also play upwards of 100 games a year each
there is too much uncertainty over a major league season, that a salary cap would force teams to drop guaranteed money from contract options (mlb lets teams give players guaranteed money, even if they get injured or something)
if that were too happen, salaries would shoot up for every player, since they would be afraid of getting hurt and demand instead more money if they play = higher team payrolls
so what do you suggest we do, make a cap of about 100 million dollars? where do you expect teams like the rays or royals to come up with that money
thats why there is revenue sharing (which is NOT reflected in a teams payroll). teams like the yanks, mets, etc. give a portion of every dollar they profit to the league, which redistributes that money to poorer teams. like robin hood almost
thats the best solution right now. there will not ever be a salary cap because the players union will never let it happen. if the salary cap issue becomes a big problem, then we will see yet another mlb strike
